We are delighted to announce that renowned British composer Philip Stopford has written a new Christmas anthem for the King’s College Choir. Known internationally for his exquisite choral compositions and dynamic leadership, Stopford brings a wealth of experience and artistry to this special commission.
The piece, titled “O Magnum Mysterium”, is a setting of the traditional Christmas Day Matin Responsory. The text, which translates to “O great mystery, and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger! O blessed virgin, whose womb was worthy to bear the Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia!”, evokes the awe and reverence of the nativity scene.
This new anthem will receive its world premiere at the public Carol Service on 9 December, marking a significant addition to the College’s rich musical tradition. Rehearsals are already underway, and the choir is preparing to bring Stopford’s vision to life with their signature clarity and warmth.
Philip Stopford, formerly Director of Music at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast, is celebrated both in the UK and the USA for his contributions to sacred music. He will join the choir in late November to lead a rehearsal of the piece, offering his insights and guidance ahead of the premiere.
This collaboration promises to be a highlight of the festive season, adding to the much-anticipated carol service.
